PromaxBDA is an association of professional entertainment and media marketing professionals. Our involvement with Promax is one of the many ways in which we connect students to the creative industry. This past June, two media arts faculty members and three students traveled to Los Angeles for the annual PromaxBDA conference. This event showcases the latest creative output of their constituents and offers workshops for professional development.
According to student Kalley Hoshaw. the 2017 conference was “a very interesting, amazing, and useful experience.” Student Kenny Ramirez Jr. agreed, adding that “the biggest thing the trip taught [him] was the faster you break out of your shell the faster you get what you’re looking for in this industry.” Everyone enjoyed the opening night party which provided exclusive access to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ at Universal Studios Hollywood. Kenny identified a session on the Hero’s Journey as his favorite presentation, and Prof. Kurt Paulsen made note of the beautifully shot practical effects in the Art of the Title session, which is always a favorite of ours.
“The PromaxBDA Conference is valuable for our program(s) and our students because it brings the conceptual and theoretical content of our classroom and studio work into full-color reality. It’s one thing to learn about design, animation and motion graphics in the abstract, but it’s another thing entirely to meet people who actually do that sort of work for a living. Better still, the students are brought into contact with the people who HIRE designers to do that kind of work for them.”
– Prof. Andy Overn
The PromaxBDA conference is a tremendous creative shot in the arm for both students and faculty. The group returned with new contacts and renewed energy! Current students—let us know if you’re interested in attending the conference next year, which will take place in New York.
